Assistive Devices

An assistive device is any product that is designed to help someone with an impairment or disability perform tasks that they otherwise find impossible or difficult. Common examples of assistive devices are walkers, wheelchairs, canes, and hearing aids. However, there are myriad lesser known devices that can have a profound impact on helping seniors maintain, or regain, their independence. For example, those with hearing impairments will benefit from a call alert system, which flashes a light when the telephone rings.

Some companies have designed ergonomically appropriate kitchen utensils for those with arthritic hands – everything from knives and forks to peelers and salad spinners. Please contact your local Regional Health Authority or Community Care Access Centre and inquire about funding for Assistive Devices.
